About
Mark Hewitt started The Rural Estate Management Service because he passionately believes that the responsible and informed management of our landscapes is vital to the well being of our countryside and rural communities.
All of us are custodians of the land for future generations whether we own it, manage it, work on it or visit and enjoy it recreationally. The services offered by REM SERVICE can help to hold this 'inheritance' and pass it on in better condition.
Land management requires a range of skills starting with the recognition of what already exists, moving to the vision of what could be through to the creation and development of that vision and finally, and equally importantly, the management of that created vision.
Whether you have a 1 acre field or 200 acres and more, knowledgeable, creative thinking is required to achieve real, sustainable results which are informed but not constrained by, traditions and traditional management. Honouring the landscape setting and where your land sits in it is essential to the concept of holding the 'inheritance' and REM SERVICE can do just that for you.
Mark has a wide range of experience in the land-based industries.
Most recently Mark was the Reserve Manager at Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve at Catterick Garrison, Britain's only LNR on MOD land. The reserve covers 90 acres of mixed habitats with an award winning Field Centre at its heart and attracts 5000 visitors per year. Prior to this post Mark was the Field Officer for the Swale and Ure Washlands Project with particular responsibility for working closely with the aggregates industry on predominantly wetland restoration schemes on quarry sites.
In addition to these posts Mark has been involved in forestry, heathland restoration and management, species re-introduction, species monitoring including bird ringing, estate horticulture, estate management, conservation projects in National Parks and nature reserves, livestock management, small shoot development and he has worked closely with and advised Parish Councils and local groups on conservation and land management issues.
